Convert & Import Blu-ray/DVD to Final Cut Pro X with 5.1 sound on Mac Mavericks

This is a detailed guide to help you extract Blu-ray/DVD movie, convert it to ProRes 422 HQ with 5.1 surround sound in FCPX with a clean edit.

Why I am missing 5.1 surround sound after converting Blu-ray/DVD to ProRes? Why FCP X log and transfer does not work with Blu-ray/DVD? Can I obtain all the languages without losing surround sound in my digitized Blu-ray/DVD movies?

You may have tried some blu-ray ripping tools and run into problems above. To be fair I have not tried many of them but also have problems like this. Hereby, with a successful trial, I'd like to share my experience here.

Firstly, you need a tool which is capable of rolling off Blu-ray/DVD disc protection, then convert them to multi-track ProRes 422 HQ with surround sound for editing in FCPX. On this step I recommend Pavtube ByteCopy for Mac because it’s quite easy to use and work reliably.

How to rip BD/DVD to ProRes 422 HQ with 5.1 sound for FCP X?

Step 1. Download and install this Pavtube ByteCopy for Mac, load disc.

Note: you need an external Blu-ray drive to make your Mac recognize Blu-rays firstly. Insert your discs, launch Pavtube and click the top left icon, you will find it detects your disc and shows the name automatically. Just click it to load.

Step 2. Choose format for editing on FCP X.

Click the “Format” icon; you may notice there’re two options of ProRes 422HQ. One is inside the “Final Cut Pro” the other is inside >Multi-track Video”. The only difference between these two presets is that the former is common one-track preset while the later could keep all your audio tracks (languages). I’d prefer the Multi-track one.

Okay choose “Multi-track Video>Multi-track Apple ProRes 422(HQ)(*.mov).

Step 3. Customize V&A settings.

Let’s move to “Settings” icon (right besides “Format”), you will find two tabs one for Video and the other for Audio. On Video tab, you can change target video quality as there are three levels for you to choose.

In the Audio tab, we can check the audio tracks we need as below:

Just leave unwanted audio tracks unchecked, change audio channels to “5.1 Channels”. Click OK to confirm the change.

Step 4. Start conversion.

Back to main interface and hit “Convert” to start ripping Blu-ray/DVD to multi-track ProRes 422HQ. After it completed, click “Open output folder” to quick locate the converted MOV files.

Why didn't DVD play on my computer?

Hello DVD fans! Have you encountered "wrong region" problems when playback DVD on computer?

We all know that a region 1 DVD cannot playback on region 2 DVD player or computer due to region code issue. It's what film distributors used to control aspects of film release, including content, box office, price or so, according to the region.

Here is a DVD region code map worldwide:

In most computers, region code restriction is written to DVD drive firmware. If you didn't set it properly, you cannot playback most DVDs even if this DVD drive is transferred to another computer. WinDVD offers five times to allow you change DVD drive region code, for example you can change your DVD drive to region 1 to play a region 1 DVD. But note if the number of allowances reaches zero, the region last used will be permanent.

Okay here is a brief guide of how to change DVD region code:

1) Open My Computer;

2) Right click drive-> Select Properties;

3) Select the one you are trying to use -> then click the "Properties" button;

4) Select the "DVD Region" Tab to set the region & change "Current Region" to "Region 1".

How to get Media Player Classic Home Cinema to play Blu-ray?

Media Player Classic Home Cinema is an extremely light-weight free program for Windows. It looks just like Windows Media Player v6.4, but has much more additional features. You can use it as a Media Player Classic Home Theater. MPC Homecinema supports a wide range of decoding formats and file formats, following are the details:

Supported Decoding:

MPEG-1, MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 playback. Media Player Classic is capable of VCD, SVCD and DVD playback, without the need to install any additional software or codecs.

It has built-in codecs for MPEG-2 video and codecs for LPCM, MP2, AC3 and DTS audio, and also contains an improved MPEG splitter that supports playback of VCDs and SVCDs using its VCD/SVCD/XCD Reader. A *.mp4 and MPEG-4 Timed Text support added. An AAC decoding filter makes MPC suitable for AAC playback in MP4.

MPC Home Cinema also has H.264 and VC-1 with DXVA support, DivX, Xvid, and Flash Video formats is available in MPC HC. MPC can also use the QuickTime and the RealPlayer architectures. Media Player Classic supports native playback of OGM and Matroska container formats.

Supported Video, Audio and Image File Formats:

WAV, WMA, MP3, OGG, SND, AU, AIF, AIFC, AIFF, MIDI, MPEG, MPG, MP2, VOB, AC3, DTS, ASX, M3U, PLS, WAX, ASF, WM, WMA, WMV, AVI, CDA, JPEG, JPG, GIF, PNG, BMP, D2V, MP4, SWF, MOV, QT, FLV

To make commercial Blu-ray movies playable with Media Player Classic Homecinema, one thing you have to do is using a Blu-ray Ripper to remove copy protections before your playback. The following contents will give you the detailed steps.

Note:

If you are using a powerful PC, you can do the following "Directly Copy". When playback, MP Classic Homecinema will automatically download codecs as needed, so you are able to successfully play m2ts files directly copied from the BD disc, which have the same quality as the original.

1. Load Blu-ray files to Pavtube BDMagic

Three ways are available – "BD/DVD ROM", "BD/DVD Folder", and "IFO/ISO".

2. Select output format

Click on the dropdown list at the end of "Format", then follow "Copy">"Directly Copy".

Note:
To use "Directly Copy" option, you need to click the "Title Mode/File Mode" button to switch to "File Mode" first. "Directly Copy" is especially recommended to those who run BDMagic on a slow PC for the sake of saving time. To remain the high quality of a Blu-ray movie, you can choose "HD Video" as output format as below:

3. Click "Settings" button to adjust audio and video parameters

Note that this option is unavailable if you are using "Directly Copy". Generally speaking, the default settings are able to satisfy your needs basically, but if you have higher expectations of the output files, you can adjust all the following video and audio parameters according to your own requirements.

4. Click "Convert" button to start Blu-ray to MPC Homecinema ripping

As soon as the ripping work is finished, you can get the output files for MPC Homecinema via tapping "Open" button. After that, you are able to import the files to MPC HC for playback. Have fun.

Additional Tips:

More than "Directly Copy" and format conversion, Pavtube BDMagic also supports "Copy the entire disc", which enables you to get a standard Blu-ray structure ready for burning.
