Blu-ray Disc Encryptions: Regions and BD Region Hack

If you would like to watch Blu-ray disc without region limitation, this article below the definition region codes and how to bypass the blu-ray region codes built into their BD players.

What are Blu-ray Disc region codes?

Region codes place geographical restrictions on where in the world a Blu-ray movie can be played. For example, a BD system bought in the USA region would play only Blu-ray movie disks with that area’s encoding.

Why are there BD region codes?

The purpose of region codes is twofold. First, it allows regional pricing to be affected by the movie studios. Since pricing will be very different around the world, the system prevents home users importing home movies bought overseas at a lower price. Secondly, it allows the control of regional release of movie titles. Often, for instance, Hollywood films are available to buy on disk in the USA and Europe before other parts of the globe. With regional encoding, the studios can prevent unlicensed movie imports so giving distributors around the world control of supply.

The region codes are entirely voluntary on the part of the studios releasing the disks, and Blu-ray movie releases need not have any region code, so called “region free” releases. If a Blu-ray movie is region free, it can be played on all systems regardless of region. Interestingly, many early releases of Blu-ray films were region free.

Blu-ray Disc regions: Region A, Region B, and Region C

The world is divided into three regions by the BDA (Blu-ray Disk Association): Region A, Region B and Region C. The following map shows the regions as defined.

A: East Asia (except Mainland China and Mongolia), Southeast Asia, the Americas and their dependencies.
B: Africa, Southwest Asia, Europe (except Russia), Oceania and their dependencies.
C: Central Asia, East Asia (Mainland China and Mongolia only), South Asia, central Eurasia and their dependencies.

Blu-ray Region Hack/Crack/Bypass

In any case, many people are trying to work out how to bypass the blu-ray region codes built into their BD players, but there are rarely successes. But there are another way to play Region A blu-ray discs on Region on B/ C BD players and PS3: Use BDMagic / ByteCopy / Video Converter Ultimate to rip commercial blu-ray discs to remove the regions, and play the unprotected Blu-ray movie from hard drive. Blu-ray players and PS3 boxes support playback of M2TS, MP4, AVI, MKV, MOV, etc.

Apple moves iOS to car dashboards

Apple's iPhone user interface will soon be seen on car dashboards with the rollout of CarPlay.

It will allow apps such as maps, music and calls running under iOS on the driver's iPhone to run on the car dashboard.

Car makers such as Mercedes-Benz and Volvo demonstrated the touch control user interface at the Geneva Motor Show this week.

"CarPlay lets drivers use their iPhone in the car with minimised distraction. We have an amazing lineup of auto partners rolling out CarPlay," said Greg Joswiak, Apple's vice president of iPhone and iOS Product Marketing.

Once iPhone is connected to a vehicle with CarPlay integration, Siri voice-activation is used to access contacts, make calls or listen to voicemails.

"When incoming messages or notifications arrive, Siri provides an eyes-free experience by responding to requests through voice commands, by reading drivers' messages and letting them dictate  responses or simply make a call," said Apple.

Similarly iPhone maps apps and iTunes music library will be displayed on the dashboard. It also supports select third-party audio apps including Spotify.

Apple says CarPlay is available as an update to iOS 7 and works with  Lightning-enabled iPhones, including iPhone 5S, iPhone 5C and iPhone 5.

It will be available in select cars shipping later this year.

Aspect Ratios Explained: What is an aspect ratio and Types of aspect ratio

Summary: A definition of aspect ratio, and the different types of aspect ratios such as 4:3 and 16:9 are described.

What is an aspect ratio?

An aspect ratio is simply a figure that represents the width-to-height ratio of an image. The easiest way to explain aspect ratios is to use an example. Take the aspect ratio 4:3. The first number, 4, signifies the width of the image while the second number, 3, indicates the height in any given unit of measure. In this case it could mean for every four inches the image is wide, it is three inches high. The measurements used are irrelevant, only the ratio matters.

Types of aspect ratio

There are multiple types of aspect ratios which are all used for different purposes. For example:

  • 4:3 is used for many computer monitors and older, non-widescreen televisions.
  • 1:1 is an uncommon square-format aspect ratio occasionally used in photography.
  • 5:4 is a computer monitor resolution, now more commonly used in mobile telephone cameras.
  • 16:9 is the aspect ratio used for High Definition television, as well as movies.
  • 14:9 is a compromise aspect ratio used to create a picture acceptable to both 4:3 and 16:9 televisions.
  • 16:10 is utilized in the majority of widescreen computer monitors.

Native aspect ratios

The two most common aspect ratios are 4:3 (used in most computer monitors and older televisions) and the “widescreen” 16:9 aspect ratio (used in films and widescreen televisions). These two aspect ratios are known as “native” aspect ratios since they are the two ratios that are currently used in display units such as DLP projectors and LCD televisions.

Currently there is still no fixed aspect ratio as some television channels broadcast in the High Definition 16:9 ratio whereas others continue to use the standard definition 4:3 format. Furthermore, DVDs offer the user the choice which of the two aspect ratios to use. In the future when Blu-Ray takes over DVDs, only a 16:9 ratio will be offered. This is still many years away from happening. 16:9 is also now becoming more common as the resolution of newer laptops with widescreens.

Anamorphic aspect ratios

Certain DVDs offer a feature known as “anamorphic widescreen” or a picture “enhanced for widescreen television” which scales the video to the aspect ratio of the screen. This means that should you play a 4:3 aspect ratio film on a 16:9 widescreen television, the black borders running across the screen will be removed. While this can also be achieved by using a “zoom” button present in many televisions, this will not increase the resolution of the image like a film played in anamorphic widescreen will. This is because during the transfer to DVD the image is stretched by one third, using what would have otherwise been unused space. As a result the full image will appear slightly sharper due the higher resolution it is using.

However, since the majority of DVDs nowadays offer the user the choice to output the film in either 16:9 or 4:3 format, this feature has been rendered somewhat redundant.

Aspect ratio comparison

When considering purchasing a projector, a television, or any other kind of display device it is important to consider the aspect ratio in relation to your needs, as each is suited to particular tasks.

16:9 aspect ratio

The main advantage of a 16:9 aspect ratio is that it is the standard that High Definition content is output at. This makes it vital if you plan on watching High Definition movies or sports, especially as these are now becoming increasingly more available. This is primarily due to the declining cost and growing popularity of Blu-Ray players, as well as the fact that many governments are actively encouraging television companies to make HDTV broadcasts available. The 16:9 aspect ratio is particularly appropriate if you watch many modern films on a home movie theatre since most movies are now produced in 16:9 format.

4:3 aspect ratio

While the 4:3 aspect ratio is viewed as somewhat dated, it is still very common and is still the standard aspect ratio for computer screens. While it is true that High Definition content is becoming more and more prevalent, the majority of broadcasters still output in a 4:3 aspect ratio. While the same cannot be said for films, if you still watch a lot of VHS tapes of older films then a 4:3 television will allow for the image to take up the screen. Displayed on a 16:9 television it would appear stretched, or would have black borders running along the edges.

Advantages of wider aspect ratios

The main advantage of widescreen aspect ratios is that it is the future standard. High Definition broadcasts are becoming more and more popular, meaning that the majority of content produced nowadays is shot in a 16:9 aspect ratio. Should you continue to use a square-like 4:3 display then the majority of content will be shown with black bars running horizontally along the edges of the screen. Furthermore, should you intend to play the latest videogame consoles, a device with 4:3 aspect ratio will not be able to output High Definition graphics, as they necessitate widescreen resolutions.

Importance of matching input aspect ratio with output.

It is important to match the aspect ratio of the display with the aspect ratio of the image source to get the most out of both devices. Many devices such as iPods and mobile phones have their own aspect ratios and may not be able to display videos of a different standard. While 4:3 televisions can display 16:9 broadcasts and vice versa, the compromise is a set of black bars bordering the screen either vertically or horizontally, which, should you own a plasma television, can cause burn in. In the case of High Definition (i.e. 16:9 aspect ratio) videogame graphics and text, when made to display in a 4:3 resolution, can often appear squashed and distorted due to the compression.

We hope this article has been useful to you!

Question: Can I watch 4:3 content on a 16:9 display?

Answer: Sure! However, you will see black bars on the top and bottom or along the sides of your image when viewing material that does not match the native resolution of your projector. (How to convert 4:3 video to 16:9 for tablet/smartphone and leave out black bars?)

Are you an iPhone 5S person or an iPhone 5C person?

An employee shows the the backside of a new Apple iPhone 5c (R) and iPhone 5s (L) at a Verizon store in Orem, Utah, Sept. 19,

As has become tradition in Apple kremlinology, techies have spent the past week trying to decipher what the "C" and the "S" stand for in Apple's new smartphones, the iPhone 5C and iPhone 5S.

Guesses both serious and sardonic for the proudly plastic, kaleidoscopic "C" include "cheap," "color" and "Chinese"; common wisdom says the "S" stands for "sensor" or "scanner" or "security."

My editor, however, had a different idea.

"Maybe C and S stand for ‘Class Struggle,'" he joked, after aggregating a list of dozens of Twitter users who had deemed the iPhone 5C "for poor people" after its unveiling.

Maybe Jason is right.

Sure as the iPhone 5 fades into obsolescence, Apple devotees know they're going to need new phones: the iPhone 5S or the iPhone 5C. What's less clear is which one. We could start retabulating the virtues of each one, but why bother? No one really needs help choosing between Apple's "forward-looking" 5S and the "colorful" 5C, both of which go on sale Friday.

Rather, put it this way: If you think you need help deciding — if you just want one more perfect article comparing the specs of the two phones — then you've already secretly decided: You're a 5S type.

Because 5S people love specs. They like to read about the 5S velocity, as speed-demons in earlier days might have shopped for Porsches. They savor the new camera numbers as if they were Diane Arbus, needing levels of pixelation not seen in nature. 5S people pore over and memorize the iPhone spec lists just so they can savor the glories of their pricey new phones in advance, and drop in pixel density and contrast ratio counts during early autumn dinner conversations.

By contrast, 5C types only ever needed one spec: $99.

The 5C crowd are people who till now considered iPhones either out of reach or overly precious. It makes sense that Apple has cast these 5C types as colorful — the multihued not-quite-middle-class identified with Rainbow Coalitions and, internationally, with the United Colors of Benetton.

(Not that the iPhone 5C is really as bargain-bin as some had expected, nor that the $100 discount will really make much of a financial difference over the course of a four-figure two-year contract. But there is no doubt that the iPhone 5C has been painted, fairly or not, as the "cheap" iPhone, of the pair.)

Moreover, 5C types are those of us who are happy with our iPhone 5 and, heck, our 4s or 4 or 3GS, too. We wish we didn't have to upgrade at all. We may even have been casting glances at the Apple off-ramp. So we're not going to get back in with Apple with the spec-manic 5S only to make the jump, months from now, to an HTC One or a Galaxy or to some other heretical artifact that wasn't even designed in California.

We are willing to put up with the infantilizing colors, with plastic phones that look like teething toys, in order not to be the dreaded spec people: pontificating to anyone who will listen about the speed and security of the 5S, conspicuously waving it about on the subway and in meetings, fingerprint-unlocking their devices not because they have anything to do on their phones, but because they enjoy the novelty, and the prestige.

Oh, but this sounds chippy. See what Apple has done? With its two phones, it has created a world where you either have to be a colorful clown — do I amuse you? — with that iPhone 5C, where you have to sign on to the fun of frugality; you can't just have a cheap phone that says, "This is all I can afford," which at least has some dignity to it.

At the same time, with dippy 5C, you renounce your right to be "forward-looking": an early adopter of the faster phone. Instead, you're upgrading — to a backward phone. And through your happy clown smile, you have to pretend you're not missing out! That you couldn't care less about the amazing, eye-popping camera or the hushed Jason Bourne palate of the muted, sophisticated thoroughbred, the iPhone 5S.

But if you get the 5S — well, you're the chick who had to have the best. Because her texts are world-historic and can't be left to slow, insecure phones. Or the gaudy plastic of her tartier 5C sisters.

This is how they divide us, these massive tech companies. How they create the illusion of an identity choice: print or e-book; high-def or standard; pro or free; s or c.

Maybe in this mobile cycle, you could ask yourself what you need more of right now: money or specs. If you're going Apple, let the money/specs question guide you to the 5S (specs) or the 5C (money). And then just be quiet about it. Don't overthink; don't regret; and don't begrudge anyone else his choice.

You may have bought in as a clear, confident act of self-expression, but that conceals the fact that you're just buying — and from the same company, for Pete's sake.
